A Well-Oiled Machine: Preparing for Race Day

Preparing for a race can be stressful, especially when there are so many details to remember. If you're a parent, you might also be thinking ahead for your kids. To achieve the best possible result on race day, it's crucial to execute every detail perfectly. In this post, I'll share a few tips to help make your race preparation less stressful.

1.       Practice Your Lead-Up to the Race: Planning your race calendar is essential. Label your races as "A," "B," or "C," with "A" being your main goal race for the season. Use a "B" race to practice your lead-up routine, especially the week before the race. Log your nutrition and activities during this period to identify what works and what doesn’t. By the time your "A" race arrives, you'll know exactly what to do to perform at your best.

2.       Make a Checklist: It might seem obvious, but creating a checklist of what you need to pack is crucial. I've made the mistake of forgetting my cycling shoes once, and trust me, you don't want to be in that situation. A checklist will give you peace of mind and significantly reduce your stress.

3.       Plan Your Trip: Know how long it will take to get to the race venue and plan your timing accordingly. Being rushed or late can add unnecessary anxiety to your race day.

4.       Have Confidence in Your Training: If you've trained well, trust in your preparation. As you line up for the race, remind yourself that you've put in the work and are ready for the challenge.

Race preparation is all about reducing stress and ensuring that every detail is covered. By practicing your lead-up routine, making checklists, planning your travel, and having confidence in your training, you can turn race day into a smooth, well-oiled machine. Remember, the more you prepare, the better your chances of success. So take the time to plan, trust in your training, and enjoy the race!
